The guitar is without doubt one of the most popular musical instrument in the world today. It's one of those musical instruments that can be carry around and can be bought at a very reasonable price. Almost everyone these days wants to learn to play the guitar, be it for a serious musical career or just for leisure.
Learning to play the guitar can be the most enjoyable experience and can also be a stressful ordeal for some. Most aspiring beginners will have to go through the tough ordeal on learning how to strum and maintaining a steady rhythm pattern not to mention the awkward chords fingerings. Through out my teaching experience, this can come pretty naturally for some while some others seems to struggle to the point that they're ready to give up. For those who are struggling with this wonderful instrument, here are 5 tips to motivate and help you along the journey:
1.The right mindset - Like everything else that involves practical application, learning the guitar requires a lot of patient and perseverance. There's no such thing as an overnight success and this is so true with the guitar as it takes time for the muscle memory to adapt to the sudden changes of physical movements required to play the guitar.
2.Choose the right guitar - Regardless of the type of guitar that you end up buying either acoustic or electric; the tip is to choose a guitar that is comfortable enough for you to play. Here are a few important things to consider when choosing your guitar: Shape, Size and 'Action' setup ('Action' is a term that describes the height distance between the strings and the fretboard). A 'V' shape guitar may look 'cool' but might not be so comfortable to play while sitting down. Grasp those guitar neck, see if it fits your hand nicely and make sure the 'Action' setup is not too high otherwise you're going to have a major 'barre chord' problem.
3.Tune your guitar - Always make sure that you guitar is in tune. You can learn how to tune your guitar by ears but this takes time, so the best thing to do is to buy an electronic tuner that can do the job for you. Those chords will never sounds right when your guitar is out of tune.
4.Find a teacher - It's true that one can learn to play by him/her self, in fact that’s exactly how I started learning, but learning by yourself can be very stressful, the process is much slower and you don't have anyone to point out your mistakes which can lead to bad habit. A good teacher will make the learning curves much more easier to navigate. You'll be amaze of how a bit of motivation from a good teacher can keep you focused rather than stressing out.
5.Search for guitar lessons online - Nowadays, there are lots of resources for guitar lessons online, all you have to do is type in the keyword of the topic that you're looking for and you're good to go. There are free, as well as paid lessons both of which are good resources for your guitar study. The only difference of the two may be the fact that a paid guitar course will provide a complete multimedia learning packages in the form of dvd's, quality online videos and accompanying ebooks that you can print out. Online lessons can go hand in hand with offline lessons since there's no two way communication with a video lesson, you can bring out any confusing matter to your guitar teacher for further explanations.
Remember, it is suppose to be fun!
