Guitars can be categorized in two basic category, ‘Acoustic’ and ‘Electric’.

Acoustic Guitars

The Acoustic Guitars are the most commonly used guitars and can be played in almost any type of music. An acoustic guitar it self can be divided in to two basic category, ‘Steel String’ and ‘Classical’, both of which have their own different features.

1.Steel String Guitar

2.Classical

Electric Guitars

Although mostly associated with rock music, Electric guitars are also used extensively in folk and other contemporary music as well. These type of guitars needs to be plug in to an external amplifier to amplify the vibration generated by the strings.

A common character of an Electric Guitar is that, it has a much more lighter string tension making it easier on the fingers. This also enables a guitar player to perform wider ‘Bends’ and execute other particular techniques that might not be as easy when played on an acoustic guitar. Frequently used with a sound effect, it provides wider choice of sounds to suite any type of music.

Among other features of an Electric Guitar are;

- Longer fret board, up to 24 frets
- Solid or semi-hallow body
- Pickups mounted on the body to pickup vibration from the strings
- Control knobs for volume and tone
- Termolo Bar

A Steel String Guitar as the name suggest, uses a steel string which has a longer sustain and best suited for contemporary music. The longer sustain makes it suitable for strumming which is a regular feature in folk and contemporary music.

Other features of a Steel String Guitar are;

- Thin neck and comes in variety of design and sizes
- Comes with and without Cutaways (for playing higher up the neck)
A Classical guitar uses nylon strings rather than steel. Nylon strings produce a warmer and softer sound with shorter sustain, this makes it suitable for playing classical music. They are also used to play Flamenco as well as ballad music.

Other features of a Classical Guitar are;

- Wider neck and generally identical to one another
- More modern design also comes with Cutaways
