There are a few ways to tune the guitar and one of the most common methods is to tune by ears. Heres how to do it:
(Before going through the steps below, the 6th string needs to be tightened. You gonna need to use your own judgment here, not to tight and not to loose either)
1. Press down and pick (play) the 6th string at the 5th fret, this will give us the note 'A'.
2. Next, pick the open 5th string. When played open, the 5th string should also produce the note A
3. Now slowly adjust the 5th string by turning the tuning peg until it matches the sound of the fretted A on the 6th string.
4. Move on to the 5th string and again press down at the 5th fret. This is D, so now play the open 4th string, listen carefully and adjust until both strings sounds the same.
5. Now to the 4th string, press down at the 5th fret and we get the note G. As before, play the open 3rd string and adjust it to match the sound of the note G.
6. For the 3rd string its a bit different, here you must move to the 4th fret. Press down and pick the string and we get the sound of B. Compare it with the open 2nd string. Adjust the 2nd string until both produce the same sound.
7. Proceed to the 2nd string, and for this, move back to the 5th fret. The sound we are getting now is E. Compare this with the open 1st string., adjust the open 1st string to match that sound and youre done!
Alternatively you can use the Tuning Audio below to help you tune up. It will play each string once starting from the 6th. The chord at the end is an E major. Match your guitar sound with this.

Tuning can be simplified by using an electronic tuner, but it is important to train your ears to hear the correct pitch of each tone. Any musician must be able to tell when their instrument is out of tune.
